The procedures and processes to be followed for accreditation are laid out in the Protocol for Accreditation, which is also available to Governments, Medical Schools, other professional or educational bodies on request.
BRIEF OVERVIEW OF PROTOCOL:
The Protocol sets out the composition, rules and structure of the ACCM, and the roles and responsibilities of the Commissioners.
The requirements of initiating the accreditation process, including eligibility requirements are stated. The steps of accreditation are laid out, and the approximate timelines for the accreditation process, whether for new, developing or existing medical schools.
The procedures for on site reviews of medical schools and their educational programmes are described, indicating the documentation to be furnished by the medical school in advance of the visit. The agenda for the review is described including a listing of all personnel to be interviewed, and the facilities and resources to be inspected. The formula for the writing of an accreditation report following the visit is described.
The process for arriving at an accreditation decision is outlined. The types of decision are described, as well as the process for notifying the government, the medical school and the public of the ACCM's decision.
The process for hearing an appeal against an adverse accreditation decision is described.
The required procedures and processes for post accreditation oversight of medical schools are stated. External and internal issues which might affect accreditation are also described.
